A look at the research
In an observational study, participants reported less tension, anxiety and depressed mood after an approximately one-hour sound session.
Goldsby et al., 2017 · Read the studyA 2025 systematic review included 19 singing bowl studies. It brings together findings on relaxation, mood and physiological measures.
Cai et al., 2025 · Read the reviewIn a randomised study with 50 participants, heart rate variability (HRV) increased in the singing bowl group. HRV describes differences in the intervals between successive heartbeats.
A study with 100 participants observed lower cortisol and blood pressure values after a four-week sound and meditation programme than in the comparison group.
The 2023 singing bowl study measured electrical brain activity using EEG. The researchers observed a decrease in alpha power.
The studies differ in bowl material, duration and delivery. The 2025 review rated the risk of bias in all included randomised studies as high.
The 2017 observational study had no control group. The four-week programme in 2026 combined several elements, and the groups experienced different delivery conditions. This makes it harder to attribute changes to sound alone.
HRV measures can provide indirect indications of parasympathetic activity. Sound frequencies and electrical brain activity measured with EEG describe different processes. These findings do not establish a specific alpha state for sound sessions in general.
The findings concern the groups and programmes studied. They do not guarantee an effect of my specific session. These studies do not demonstrate a special healing effect of individual sound frequencies such as 432 or 528 Hz.
Sound arises from mechanical vibrations. A sound bath centres on conscious listening. Sound massage also involves direct contact with the body. Research examines these applications under their respective conditions.
Frequenz & Focus brings together singing bowls, breath and guided focus exercises for relaxation, mindfulness and personal wellbeing. The name describes this sound and focus practice.
Terms such as “frequency therapy” or “sound wave therapy” are used in different contexts. My offering consists of the guided sound and focus practice described here.
